St James College is a Catholic coeducational college for Years 5 - 12 in the Edmund Rice tradition. It is unique place of faith and learning excellence of 21st century skills and capabilities, as inspired by the college mantra: Global Learning, Achieving Aspirations.

St James is exemplary in the continued success in delivering a hybrid educational model that considers the skills necessary for workplaces for the future. A mix of both hard skills, those related to technical knowledge and training, and soft skills, those related to leadership, communication, and time management, will be imperative.

Students choose from flexible curriculum pathways that lead to tertiary study, further training, or employment. St James College provides an extensive academic and vocational curriculum which has been developed to provide more flexible, effective education to cater for the individual needs of students. Courses in curriculum areas for the junior school are divided into modules of ten weeks and are planned according to the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority, Queensland State-wide Junior Syllabi, and School Based Syllabi. Courses have been developed to cater for those who are gifted and talented and for the learning needs of students and those who require extra support.

The Ba-ra Barimi Learning Centre

The Ba-ra Barimi Learning Centre (Ba-ra Barimi is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘upward dreaming’) is a purpose-built library space where staff are committed to the integration of information literacy, information technologies, and literature to empower students to become lifelong independent learners and responsible digital citizens.

The learning space provides quality and easily accessible information services that meet the teaching, learning, and recreational needs of the school community.

The library maintains dynamic spaces for:

  • Teaching and learning.
  • Students to collaborate, work, and socialise.
  • Quiet study and reading.
  • Academic consultation and tutoring.
  • St James library catalogue.

 

Learning Enhancement Centre

The learning Enhancement Centre aims to ensure student ability is promoted with inclusive practices.

The department acts in a consultative and collaborative capacity in addressing the learning needs of all students. Upon enrolment, the educational needs of individual students are identified and, where appropriate, extension and support processes for progressing learning are implemented.

The multidisciplinary team collaboratively gains a thorough understanding of the young person’s educational needs and designs a plan on how they can be achieved within the inclusive curriculum model offered at the college.

 

Indigenous Sacred Space

The college Indigenous Sacred Space was designed and built in 2019 around the large fig tree that sits on the corner of the campus.

Indigenous staff and students consulted with local elders and the wider community to create the space.

Historically, the protected fig tree marked the boundary that segregated Indigenous people from European settlement.

Jimmies on the Dam

The St James College Lake Maroon Dam facility, affectionately called ‘Jimmies on the Dam’, services the delivery of Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation and provides a venue for camps, leadership group activities, outdoor education classes, and vocational studies.

 

Trade Skills Centre

The Trade Skills Centre is a state of the art centre equipped with machinery for the study of engineering, design and technology, creative industries, furnishing and construction.

 

St James College students are members of the Metropolitan East Zone, affording them to access a wide variety of sports such as swimming, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, netball, soccer, rugby league, and many others. Additionally, students can participate in at-school activities which include cultural, esports, and arts games.

Past college teams and individual students have achieved outstanding results in local, national, and global sporting arenas.

One of the college’s unique curriculum streams include fitness, outdoor education, and sports programs where students gain skills that are transferable to many areas of life, including: first aid, lifesaving, rock climbing, kayaking, wilderness survival, sport coaching, and fitness instructing.

 

Jimmies Basketball

The unique and exciting Jimmies basketball program of excellence is available to all students of all levels of ability.

The focus is on individual skill development and post school pathways that encompass academic and basketball opportunities.

The program runs all year round with skill sessions, camps, tours, and tournaments and is accessible to all students regardless of their financial circumstances. St James College are state and national finalists in basketball.

The college has a high-performance philosophy which is exemplified through its arts and cultural programs.

With diversity across the college, students participate in a variety of opportunities linked to the arts that are fundamental to their growth, skills attainment, and attribute to 21st century learners, such as:
